SHOES & WINTER CLOTHING

Many children and youth arrive at school under dressed for the weather, missing basic items or unable to participate due to lack of suitable clothing, proper footwear or hygiene items. We aim to provide children and youths in need throughout our region with access to funds to help acquire the necessary clothing, shoes and hygiene items to enable students to concentrate on what matters - their education! 1 on 5 children in Canada lives in poverty. 2017 National Vital Signs Report

SNACKS & NUTRITION PROGRAMS

Students learn best with fuel. We aim to provide funding for breakfast, lunch and/or snack programs across our region. We want to ensure no student is hungry. Many students in our region arrive at school in without having eaten breakfast and with a lunch. Health Canada reported that in 2012, 1 in 12 Albertan households experienced moderate to severe food insecurity. Students in middle and secondary schools where a free breakfast was offered before or during first period, revealed that 78% of high school students who ate breakfast at least three days per week were on track for graduation, compared with 61% of students who ate it only on a few days or not at all - HEQCO2017. Children from homes with persistent food insecurity have shown smaller gains in both their reading and math than their food-secure counterparts. SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Buying school supplies can add up and classrooms are not always fully stocked. No student should go without the necessary tools to fully participate in school. Many students live below the poverty line and cannot afford the necessary tools for starting a successful school year. We aim to reduce one of the know barriers preventing children and youth from successfully learning and participating in school. Our goal is to make sure no student in need from throughout our region begins 2018/19 school year without needed school supplies.

Communities Served

The United Way Alberta Northwest serves an area of roughly one quarter of Alberta, from Grande Cache to the NWT border and from Slave Lake to the B.C. border. We focus on ensuring the funding we provide our community partners has significant positive impact in our communities and is based on outcome measures and identified need. In the context of the Tools for School program our community partners also include any local elementary and secondary school serving grades K-12.
